The album, “Safe Within His Arms” includes 12 songs to encourage one to build a serious spiritual relationship with God. This album received accolades from many listeners coast to coast. I was fortunate to be selected as “Best Male Vocalist” at the 2000 National Academy of Acappella Gospel Music (CAMA), and the City of Valdosta Gospel Grammies. Considering the talented category mates this was a pleasant surprise, but it also confirmed to me that we really have something worth pursuing. Personal highlights from this album are: “We’ll Sing Hallelujah”. This is a song about our ultimate desire as Christians--to go to heaven and be free from the cares of this world and worship God eternally. This is the favorite song of many of our frands (I don’t have fans. I prefer to call them friends but when you don’t really know someone, how can they be friends, thus the word, frands). Sometimes I’ve received threats that if I didn’t sing “We’ll Sing Hallelujah”, I was going to be dealt with in a terrible way. I don’t think they were serious though…but I did the song anyway, you never know these days! You know we can never tell what tomorrow may bring. “I Don’t Know About Tomorrow” really explores some possibilities. However, this song provides confidence in knowing and respecting the providence of God. Another Soul Stirrer song is ”He’s My Guide”, again a testament to the albums theme of knowing, trusting and leaning on God. The rhetorical “What Are You Doing for your Soul”, really causes the listener think about their priorities in life. “What does it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul?” This old scripture based Dixie Hummingbird song still has a special message. I wrote “No More Drifting” while reflecting on the situation of a friend. It’s heart breaking to see someone full of fire for the Lord one week and then the next week you hear they’re back to their fallen status, “drifting”. What’s more, you know they are sincerely trying to change. It’s a sad thing, but many of us go through it. The title track, “Safe Within HIS Arms” is a beautiful duet with Gloria Watkins, formerly of the Southside Singers of Rogersville AL. To hear her expressively articulate the real meaning of this song is all one needs to feel empowered and uplifted. I wrote this song with her voice in mind and boy does she deliver!! Another highlight is the Steve Adams Chorus, as with the other songs, I’m doing all the background vocals but this time I’m doing a whole choir. It was challenging, but mostly fun. “Just How Much HE Cares” is a personal gem from my catalog. Imagine the voice of God telling you “I’ll be with you always, even to the end of the age”! Would you believe it then? I know God doesn’t audibly talk to us today, but through his word, he does. The album concludes with “I Surrender All”, this classic song of surrender to the will of God will always be a favorite of mine. Amy Musselwhite gives a brilliant performance. I challenged her to do some gospel with me—a change from the hymnals she was used to. Don’t let her blue eyes fool you. She oozes soul! |
